A SCREENING OF THE HORIZONS PERFORMANCE WILL BE HELD

14.7.22 FROM 7PM

THREE TANNERS BANK, NORTH SHIELDS NE30 1JH

AND AGAIN ON 16 JULY 11-3

On a clear Sunday morning in February 2022, a live audience witnessed the extraordinary moment 61 women blocked the horizon at Cullercoats Bay with hand sewn banners. In this powerful and unifying act, the women created an emotional performance work that links past and present.

The banners, which represent the pleated skirts worn by the Cullercoats fisherwomen of the nineteenth century, have been elaborately stitched by a female collective. The banners are tarred on the reverse, sealing in the stitches and representing the preservation of disappearing female narratives. The act of obscuring the horizon is a commentary on halted futures due to gender.

The air was still and the sunrise perfect. For all those involved it was a powerful experience.
